Experiences with Drought and the Livestock Forage Disaster Program in Arizona

The USDA Livestock Forage Program (LFP) compensates livestock producers for losses caused by drought and wildfire based on the United States Drought Monitor (USDM). Through interviews with livestock producers and rangeland managers, CLIMAS researchers found that official drought designations often differed from impacts experienced by ranchers, leaving some losses ineligible for reimbursement. Greater integration of local drought experiences to characterize drought conditions can increase the LFP’s responsiveness to drought.
